Two Separate Cuba-Headed Aid Vessels Listed Unaccounted For subsequent to Leaving the Coast of Mexico.
A extensive search and rescue effort is actively under way in the Caribbean Sea for a duo of missing boats transporting humanitarian supplies journeying from the Mexican coast to Cuba.
Maritime Search Efforts Initiated
The Mexican government has dispatched naval assets and search planes to locate the Friendship and Tigger Moth, which were transporting a minimum of 9 personnel, as stated by a navy statement.
The vessels had been expected to make landfall in Cuba's capital on either Tuesday or Wednesday, but there has been a complete lack of contact from them and no confirmation of their safe arrival, the statement clarified.
Context of Aid to the Island
Cuba has leaned on humanitarian shipments from Mexico over recent weeks, as the country grapples with multiple power outages across the country.
"Both crews and captains are seasoned mariners, and the two ships are outfitted with suitable safety systems and emergency beacons," a representative involved in the effort said.
The nine crew members are nationals of France, Poland, the United States, and Cuba. Mexican authorities said it has opened communications with coast guard agencies from those nations along with their diplomatic representatives.
"The group is collaborating completely with the authorities and remain confident in the capability of the sailors to safely arrive in Havana," the official further stated.
Earlier Aid Delivery
Just days before, the Cuban authorities publicly celebrated and warmly received a separate vessel that had carried a significant amount of donated goods to the country.
That ship, dubbed "Granma 2.0" after the boat in which the revolutionary leader returned to Cuba to start the Cuban Revolution in the 1950s, delivered solar panels, medicines, formula milk, bicycles and food.
Broader Geopolitical Climate
Charity groups and individuals have largely spearheaded initiatives to ship humanitarian aid to Cuba beginning in January, when a oil sanctions on the island nation began.
International organizations have since warned of ""critical" shortages of supplies, with in excess of 50,000 surgical procedures postponed in Cuba amid power shortages.
Diplomatic tensions have been ramped up lately, with statements from several officials underscoring the complex state of bilateral relations.
Responding to previous statements, a high-ranking Cuban official declared that "the political system of Cuba is non-negotiable."
Accounts suggest that early stages of negotiations commenced, although their ongoing development remains uncertain.
The Mexican navy said it was dedicated to using every available asset at its command to discover the vessels and ensure the well-being of the people on board.
As of now, there has been no public statement on the disappeared vessels by the government in Havana.
