Much like bad weather tore through the northern region the prior day, the home side overwhelmed Manchester United away at the Etihad Stadium. It was a statement three-nil win for the City coach's side owing to goals from Rebecca Knaak, Bunny Shaw and Hemp. It was a display that truly announced their championship potential as they consolidated their standing at the WSL pinnacle.

Back-to-Back Losses for Manchester United

This outcome represented back-to-back Women's Super League losses for Skinner's side for the first time since spring 2024, placing them seven points off the table toppers with their trophy ambitions hanging by a thread.

The Red Devils' capability to manage domestic and continental football with a thin squad has been a hotly discussed issue since they secured entry to the European competition. Reviewing the fixture list, it always appeared this was the period that would fully examine this fortitude. Sadly for the visitors, they looked weary from start to finish, the landmark win against the French side clearly having taken a toll.

Tactical Shifts

Marc Skinner had tried to make changes with a handful of changes. Toone, Elisabeth Terland, Dominique Janssen and Galton all provided vigor, although the dropping of the high-performing Melvine Malard to the substitutes was questioned.

The hosts, in opposition, have no such fitness issues. The City coach made one change from the previous win over the Toffees with Lauren Hemp making her first start since recovering from a fitness issue.

Commanding Opening Period

Opening Threats

The omens came soon when Miedema used her physicality to muscle Zigiotti off the ball, only to send her shot past the post. Scoring Spree

They turned chances into goals with almost the first period played when Aoba Fujino won the hosts a set-piece. A ball to the back post was directed across goal by Bunny Shaw for Rebecca Knaak to nod home. It was City’s 7th goal from a cross of the season.

They extended their cushion with an additional two goals just before the break. When Jade Rose was allowed to maraud through the center from the back, the play became spacious for the hosts. The influential Casparij received possession on the right before sending a precise driven ball for Bunny Shaw to force home. A short time later, they had a third goal after a swift shift in possession saw Lauren Hemp given the room to strike a shot home from range.

After the Break

The primary substitution came from Skinner at the half-time as Malard entered for Elisabeth Terland but by this time it was futile to shift the momentum of the game. Ex- City player Park came most likely to score, rattling the post, but the visitors were offensively poor and did not manage to produce a one shot on goal.

The home side, in contrast, could have increased their cushion when a superb Miedema through ball sent Shaw away only for her to fail to convert but it was insignificant to the hosts. After failing to beat any side who finished above them in the prior term, Jeglertz’s side now have victories against Arsenal and United to put them in a commanding position after nine matches.
