The Chainsaw Man Film Tops the U.S. Cinema Earnings in Debut Weekend
Can Sony claim to have done it again? In the wake of the triumph of Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle, which grossed more than $600 million globally, the latest Chainsaw Man film has reached beyond the $100 million milestone internationally, attaining a global total of over $108 million during its debut. This movie outperformed the horror sequel Black Phone 2 (almost $13 million) in its second weekend in cinemas, as well as the film Springsteen: Deliver Me From Nowhere featuring the talented Jeremy Allen White (nine million dollars).
Notable U.S. and Worldwide Earnings
Helmed by filmmaker Tatsuya Yoshihara, the movie is a straightforward follow-up of the initial season of Chainsaw Man. It grossed over $18 million domestically after a strong five-point-two-million-dollar Saturday earnings and four-point-five-million-dollar Sunday performance. Globally, the animated by MAPPA feature added $14.7M across 46 global regions, pushing its worldwide total to over $60 million under Sony ($43.1 million international, $18.2 million in the U.S.). Sony has yet to announce its complete box office tally.
Comparisons to Other Anime Hits
Specialist agency an industry expert had earlier commented, contrasting the feature's anticipated earnings to Jujutsu Kaisen 0, which grossed $34M in the domestic market in 2022 and debuted with a similar $18M stateside. The new film's debut weekend matches that benchmark, while its $108 million international sum currently tracks just behind Jujutsu Kaisen 0’s $166.6M total earnings. Although it’s unlikely Chainsaw Man – The Movie: Reze Arc will achieve the box office of blockbuster Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle, this is still a major victory for the distributor.
Marketing Campaigns Drive Success
Sony and its subsidiary Crunchyroll have successfully utilized community involvement to propel their supremacy at the anime box office. This film's advertising push kicked off at the Anime Expo in LA in July with a MAPPA presentation, unique experiences, and Pochita-themed pictures, followed by a notable appearance at NYCC featuring never-before-seen content, audience giveaways, and more MAPPA sessions. Moreover, organizers held an private showing for enthusiasts for moviegoers and popular figures too after the concluding day of the convention.
Future Prospects
This year marks a significant period for animated films, and for the studio, which has an additional feature-length anime releasing this year in the upcoming Jujutsu Kaisen: Execution in late this year.
