Mikel Arteta Praises a More Dependable Squad and Reveals Kai Havertz Setback.
Mikel Arteta remains confident that his side can continue to cope with fitness issues after disclosing that attacker Kai Havertz will not return for the coming weeks.
Extended Absence for Havertz
The German forward has been sidelined for months following an operation on his knee. Hoped to be available at the start of this month, Arteta explained the player hit a snag when advancing his recovery and failed to reach “the next phase.”
“Our experience helped us build a group that is much more reliable and has increased versatility,” Arteta said.
Selection Dilemma for Brentford Clash
This news creates a selection headache for Wednesday’s home game against Brentford. A decision is required between sticking with Mikel Merino, who found the net in an unfamiliar forward role against Chelsea, or bringing back Viktor Gyökeres, who made a return off the bench off the bench. Veteran striker Gabriel Jesus is available after 11 months out.
Fitness Doubts Persist
Additional concerns surround centre-back William Saliba and attacker Leandro Trossard, who were absent for the weekend encounter. As a result, recent arrivals Cristhian Mosquera and Piero Hincapié are likely to start again in the heart of the defence for the table-toppers.
Arteta believes the substantial investment on squad depth in the last transfer window has resulted in a more robust situation to handle such setbacks.

Questioned if increased squad depth was aiding their championship push, Arteta was emphatic. “Indeed, as this campaign has presented greater challenges in certain positions, and now what’s happening with the backline,” he noted.
“History has shown us that we must deploy players in various roles, and they must be capable to adapt to new tasks if we want to compete at this level. And the example of Mikel is just the best one.”
Manager’s Sympathy for Suffering Havertz
Speaking about the delay highlighted by Germany manager Julian Nagelsmann, Arteta provided more insight. “He was doing everything. He was unable to progress to the subsequent stage and now the signs are like we have solved that issue.”
The manager conveyed his keenness to welcome him back. “Everyone is eager to have him. Truly, it’s a player that, in my view, I admire greatly for the qualities he offers to the team, but his mentality, his nature. I watch him struggle on the sidelines.”
