It was at this compound where the president and first lady were captured, Venezuelan ruling party leader a party official stated.
Just Moments Before - The President Issues the Order
The mission began with reports of explosions at about 02:00 local time (6:00 Greenwich Mean Time).
American forces cut power across the capital, Trump later described, describing it as "dark and deadly".
The goal was to neutralize Venezuela's air defences and open up the path for US military helicopters to reach Fuerte Tiuna.
"We assessed that we had maintained totally the element of surprise", the top general commented.
Strike locations encompassed the compound, a port and an airfield. Images show Fuerte Tiuna engulfed in flames, with huge flames visible from a great distance.
Venezuelans have described the way US military helicopters flew low above the city, en route to the military base.
Some of the helicopters came under fire, but managed to continue flying, military leaders stated.
There was a lot of gunfire," the President added.
A Lightning-Fast On-the-Ground Operation
Once on the ground, troops from an elite special operations unit, acted with speed.
They entered to the compound at 02:01 Caracas time, and the presidential couple surrendered without a struggle, according to reports.
But, further information emerged. The Maduros tried to escape into a secure location, referred to as a military "fortress".
"The safe place was constructed of steel, and he wasn't able to get inside because our guys were so fast.
"It was an extremely heavy entryway, a massive door," Trump informed the media. "He made it the entrance. He was unable to shut it."
However, even assuming they had managed to enter the safe room, troops could have blown it open in about "47 seconds".
From Caracas to Manhattan
Now in US custody, Nicolás Maduro and his wife were transported approximately 3,400 kilometers, to New York City.
They were taken by air out of Caracas via chopper, and taken to a US warship, a warship positioned in the Caribbean. The operation was back in international waters before 4:30 AM.
It was on the ship where one of the defining pictures from the entire mission was captured - Maduro shackled, with hearing protection and darkened eyewear resembling opaque glasses.
From the USS Iwo Jima, his initial stop was to the US Navy base at Guantánamo Bay.
They were then flown on a government plane to Stewart Air National Guard Base in New York state, before a final helicopter transfer to Manhattan.
Facing The Legal System in US Territory
That same day, footage was released showing the detainee inside the Drug Enforcement Agency's (DEA) main office in New York.
He and Cilia Flores are presently being held in a detention centre within the city.
They face charges including planning drug-related terrorism and cocaine trafficking, possession of automatic weapons and explosives, and plots to acquire such weapons and destructive devices against the US.
They are set to encounter the complete force of the US legal system in the United States within US courtrooms," the Attorney General declared.
