An Story of Unexpected Kindness: When a Student Let Me Sleep on Her Dorm Ground

Back in the year 2006, I traveled to the Australian capital for an interview at a medical college. My plan was to book lodging when I arrived, but once I got there, a big convention was in town and all the budget hostels and cheap hotels were fully booked.

Hailing from Singapore, the idea crossed my mind perhaps I could bed down in the terminal – but soon learned Canberra airport, unlike Singapore’s, is not open around the clock. Not knowing what my next move should be and feeling increasingly desperate, I hopped on a city-bound bus and began walking in the direction of the casino, thinking I might spend the night somewhere that was open all night. Admittedly, this plan in the best shape for acing a crucial interview the next morning, but as a student on a tight budget, luxury accommodation was impossible.

We could all use more folks with such compassion.

It seems I seemed confused since a woman saw me walking aimlessly through downtown and asked whether I needed help. I explained my predicament and right away she offered I was welcome to sleep on the floor at her university residence at the local university – which was perfect, given that my my medical school interview would take place the next morning. Generously, she also provided some food: one of the stuffed baguettes she had from her work shift. I had access to the bathroom and a secure location and safe to sleep.

Looking back, I now understand what a big chance she took as a young woman letting a man she’d just met sleep on her floor. At that time I existed within my male privilege bubble and not even thinking to such safety concerns. As a dad now, I am astonished she took that chance – and remain deeply appreciative.

Ultimately, I did not attending that university, and I lost touch with the student afterwards, but I’ve never forgotten her selfless deed of generosity. My sincere desire is that the universe has returned her generosity abundantly. Our society requires more individuals with such compassion.
